Hello,
NET Members!
Welcome to the October NETwork.
Here is where we are: The NCLB debate continues despite assurances
from Capitol Hill that the vote will occur "before the August
recess," "next week," or "in two days."
This is actually good because not all is well with the Congressional drafts.
So I am issuing a CALL TO ACTION: Chairs, please guide your
committees in producing letters (fax and email formats are fine) on
NCLB-related topics of concern to your members. The topic(s) can
reach beyond your committee's specified area.
Politicians pay more attention if letters are from their
constituents, so committee members should send the letters to their
individual representatives (both Senate and House), with copies to
Congressman Miller's and Senator Kennedy's offices. (Find
Congressional contact information at www.house.gov.) Also—this
is important—forward
a copy to ESEA.Comments@mail.house.gov
and another to me.
For each letter, try to get at least 10 signatories who are registered
voters in your representatives' districts and states. In other words,
get friends, colleagues and family to sign.
At left are links to great material that can aid you. Paraphrase or
cut and paste, but please cite your sources: The name of
the person(s) and/or organization, as well as the website URL.
Next
month the NET will be a year old—a
time for reflection and restructuring. Some committee chairs, due
mostly to being busy with worthy activities outside the NET, have
not been able to devote the necessary time to their NET chairships.
If this describes you, please contact me about stepping down. (I
hope you will continue as a committee member.) If any non-chair
feels inclined to chair a committee, please contact me.
The
NET received its first news media mention in September. The article,
from the Springfield Republican, is linked at left.
Warm
regards,
Dennis
