Chair Miller's NCLB list

Bilingual committee NCLB proposal

NET membership statistics

Hello, NET Members!
Come join Jim Crawford and me in Washington D.C. on July 10-12 to discuss the No Child Left Behind Act with members of Congress and their staffs. Jim, who is president of the Institute for Language and Education Policy, is organizing this undertaking, and we will be joined by several members of the Institute. See the story link at left.

A week ago most of you received a list of changes that Education Chair George Miller is proposing for NCLB. You can view this list from the link at the left. It is satisfying to read, considering where things were six months ago. Add the fact that Speaker Pelosi recently told NET secretary Jacqueline Kenneally that NCLB is being "overhauled in significant ways," and we have reason for optimism. However, the fact that Chair Miller's list is a plea for support from freshman members of Congress reminds us that its passage is not yet assured.

Also, each month until the new incarnation of NCLB is made into law, NETwork will run an exemplary NCLB proposal from one of our committees. This month features the proposal of the Bilingual and Second Language Education Committee, which is ably chaired by Úrsula Casanova. No word yet on the new incarnation's name. The NET submitted a number of suggestions. What an honor if we end up naming the law.

And speaking of satisfying, I compiled some descriptive statistics on our membership that reveal the NET to be a rapidly growing, diverse organization.

Warm regards,

Dennis
